Walk-in tubs for Sacramento-area homes

Open the door, step in over a low threshold, and sit down to bathe. No more climbing over the side of a tub. Most installs are finished in one day, and a licensed local contractor does the work.

A walk-in tub fits in about the same space as a standard tub.

Is a walk-in tub the right choice?

It's a good fit for a lot of people, but not everyone. Here's how we'd sort it out if you asked us over the phone.

Usually a good fit if…

  • Stepping over the tub wall has started to feel risky
  • You like to soak and don't want a shower-only bathroom
  • Sitting down while you bathe is more comfortable
  • You plan to stay in the house for years

Maybe not if…

  • You don't want to sit in the tub while it fills and drains. That takes a few minutes each way.
  • Getting down to a seat and back up is already hard. A curbless walk-in shower with a bench may be safer.
  • You mostly shower anyway and rarely take baths

How it works, start to finish

  1. Free in-home visitWe measure the bathroom, look at your water heater and electrical panel, and go over which models fit. You get the price in writing.
  2. Permit, if neededIf your city or the county requires a permit for the plumbing or electrical work, the contractor pulls it. You don't have to go to the building department.
  3. Install dayThe old tub comes out, the walls are prepped, and the new tub is set, leveled and connected. Most jobs take one day. Tubs with jets that need a new electrical circuit can take a second day.
  4. WalkthroughWe fill the tub with you, show you the door seal, the controls and the drain, and make sure you're comfortable using it before we leave.

What it costs

National cost guides put a walk-in tub, installed, at roughly $3,500 to $10,000. Models with air or water jets, heated seats, or extra-wide doors cost more. California labor and permit costs usually run above the national average.

What really moves the price is your bathroom: whether the tub goes in the same spot as the old one, whether your water heater can fill it, and whether you need a new electrical circuit.

Paying for it

Medicare doesn't cover walk-in tubs. Veterans may qualify for VA home modification grants. Some people can count part of the cost as a medical expense on their taxes.

Questions to ask any walk-in tub company

Whoever you hire, and it doesn't have to be us, get clear answers to these before you sign:

  1. What's your contractor's license number? Look it up at cslb.ca.gov. It takes a minute and shows whether the license is active and bonded.
  2. Can my water heater fill this tub? Walk-in tubs hold more water than a regular tub. If nobody checks your heater, you may end up with a lukewarm bath.
  3. Who does the installation? Your own crew, or a subcontractor you've never met?
  4. What does the door-seal warranty cover, and for how long? The door seal is the part that matters most.
  5. Does the price include everything? Removal of the old tub, wall finishing, permit, and any electrical work.
  6. Is this price still good next week?

Be careful with "today only" pricing. A fair price doesn't expire when the salesperson walks out. And if you're 65 or older and sign a contract at home, California gives you five business days to cancel.
