What a walk-in tub costs in the Sacramento area

Price ranges by type, the costs people don't see coming, and how to compare quotes.

The short answer

Most walk-in tubs cost somewhere between $3,500 and $10,000 installed, according to national cost guides like Fixr. Heavily advertised brands with lots of features can go well past that. Expect Sacramento-area quotes to land toward the middle or upper part of the range, because California labor and permit costs are higher than in most states.

The only way to get a real number is to have someone look at your bathroom. Here's what goes into it.

Price by type of tub

TypeTypical installed range*What you get
Soaking tub$3,000 – $7,000Door, seat, grab bar, deep water. No jets.
Hydrotherapy (air or water jets)$4,000 – $12,000Jets, often heated surfaces. Needs a dedicated electrical circuit.
Wheelchair-access$4,500 – $12,000Wide, outward-swinging door for transferring from a chair.
Bariatric (wide)$4,500 – $11,500Wider seat and door, higher weight rating.

What pushes the price up

Your water heater

This is the one people don't expect. A walk-in tub is deep, and many hold 50 to 80 gallons or more. A standard 40- or 50-gallon tank can run out of hot water before the tub is full. The fix might be filling it a little lower, installing a larger tank or a tankless heater, or choosing a model with a built-in inline heater. Any of those adds cost, so the heater should be checked at the estimate, not on install day.

Electrical work

Tubs with jets or heated seats need their own GFCI-protected circuit. If your panel has room and the run to the bathroom is short, this is simple. Older homes with full panels can need more work.

Moving the plumbing

Putting the walk-in tub where your old tub was is the cheapest option. Putting it where a shower stall was, or anywhere new, means moving the drain and supply lines.

Walls and finish

Removing a tub usually damages the tile or surround around it. The quote should say whether new wall panels, tile repair or paint are included.

Permits

Depending on where you live, the permit comes from the City of Sacramento, Sacramento County (for places like Carmichael, Fair Oaks and Orangevale), or your own city's building department (Elk Grove, Folsom, Roseville and others). Fees vary, and a good contractor includes them in the quote.

How to compare quotes

  • Get at least two written quotes, and make sure they cover the same things: tub model, removal, wall finish, electrical, permit and warranty.
  • Ask for the exact model name so you can look it up yourself.
  • Don't let anyone rush you. If a price is only good "if you sign today," treat that as a warning sign.
  • Check the license at cslb.ca.gov before you sign anything.
